SUMMARY:Called to Care: Are You Ready? Virtual Lunch & Learn with Jane Barton
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Lunch and Learn Virtual Event\n\n\nCalled to Care – Are You Ready? \nCaregiving is a universal concern. We will all serve as caregivers numerous times over the course of a lifetime. And\, we will all need care at some point in time. So\, there are some questions worthy of consideration. When\, not if\, you are called to companion a friend\, family member\, or client challenged by aging and/or illness\, how will you respond? Will you (must you) assume full responsibility of care? Or\, are you able and/or willing to share the responsibilities of care with other family members\, friends\, or caregiving professionals? Our approach to caregiving determines our ultimate experience. So\, when we are called to companion\, it’s important to know that there are alternatives to flying solo – collaborative approaches to care that are beneficial for the caregiver and care receiver.  The program is FREE. Registration is REQUIRED. Click on the LINK to register.

SUMMARY:Calling All Caregivers: Aging Solo with Jane Barton
DESCRIPTION:Calling All Caregivers Virtual Event\n\n\nThe Challenges of Aging Solo \nA key factor in aging well is having a reliable social support system (family and friends). Due to the changing demographics in the United States\, it is estimated that 20-30% of the population over the age of 65 live alone and will age alone. The strict definition of a solo ager or elder orphan is someone who lives alone\, has no children\, and does not have a life partner. But a broader definition of solo aging highlights the reality that we are ALL at risk of “going solo” due to circumstances—the death of a spouse or partner\, a divorce\, or geographic isolation from family and friends. The consequences of aging alone are numerous and extensive: a lower quality of life\, a shorter life expectancy\, complications in the caregiving journey\, and physical isolation leading to an enhanced sense of loneliness. So\, how can we proactively reinforce and expand our social support systems to avoid the negative consequences of aging solo? The program is FREE. Registration is REQUIRED. Click on the LINK to register.

SUMMARY:How Could We Serve Caregiving Youth?
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Healthy Kids Colorado survey asked middle and high schoolers in Colorado whether or not they “provide care for someone in their family or household who is chronically ill\, elderly\, or disabled with activities they would have difficulty doing on their own one or more days a week.” An estimated 12.4% of high schoolers and 20.5% of middle schoolers responding said yes. \nCaregiving youth who provide care for adults and/or younger children in their families\, households\, and communities often go unseen by professionals working in community settings like public and school libraries. We ask “How do I get teens into the library?” instead of asking what responsibilities teens have at home that prevent them from visiting the library. During this session\, our panel of experts and caregivers will help us learn more about how to better see these unseen young people. \nThrough large and small group discussion\, let’s come together to consider what shifts we could make to our spaces\, systems\, services\, and programs that will allow us to meet some of the needs of caregiving youth and those in their care. From simple things we could change tomorrow\, to big dreams with potentially big impacts on our organizations and communities\, we can share in advancing our goal to serve all young people through our public and school libraries. \nParticipants may want to view the recording of the January 13th panel before this event for additional background information. \nThis will be a HIGHLY interactive session. Please come prepared to actively participate in the discussion. \nBecause of the nature of this discussion session\, it will NOT be recorded. \nRegister here: https://www.librarieslearn.org/calendar/talking-teen-services-how-could-we-serve-caregiving-youth
